「Civil」や「Behind」などスペルが/i/や/e/だと、「イ」と発音したくなってしまいますが、英語では全く違ったニュアンスで発音されているものがいくつかあります。
それが「Schwa」（発音記号で/ə/）、要するにあいまいな母音です。これはストレスを置かない母音で、ボソッと「アッ」って感じで発音します。
